How stupid is the LibDem leader?

You are invited to talk about proportional representation with some New Labour types in Number 10. You know that Gordon Brown, John Prescott and most trade unions loathe and despise proportional representation as the love of middle class wankers. This means it is a very sensitive subject. That's why the talks are secret, and being held with a trusted Blair ally only.

So what do you do? Why, you put it in the newspapers.

This does three things:

First, it tips off the First past the posters, who will now combine to crush any review.

Second, it destroys trust with the Blairites. Why talk if you don't trust them to do it? Why sould they talk to you if it'll be in the papers?

Third, it raises speculation that a coalition is on the cards after the next general election. This meme aids the tories massively. Why vote for the Lib-Dems, they will say, if they will support the government in exchange for a PR pledge? It also destroys the LD's anti-Government credibility.

Well, I leave the esteemed Tom Watson MP, one time editor of "Liberal Demolition" and fervent advocate of first past the post to apply christmas beatings to the relevant pimply special advisor. (Sad truth is that No 10's pimpled cheapsuits are off limits. No PPS could pick a fight with one and win. But John and Gordon can).

Update: Tom can clearly count on sturdy support from the Labour Blogosphere. Paul Richards is a longtime Lib Dem loather, and shares my prejudices in his post on the same topic.

Attention Football fans

If there is one lesson from 2003 it is that England only win a World Cup under a Labour government.

1966. 2003. The next world cup is in 2006. The next General Election will be 2005.

Think before you vote.
